If you are familiar with GPS devices then you don’t need to read many Garmin Nuvi reviews to realize that Garmin makes the best GPS available on the market. I’ve owned a couple different brands of GPS’ and nothing is like a Garmin.

I’ve even owned a couple different models of Garmin GPS’. Most recently I’ve purchased the Garmin Nuvi 1490LMT (5-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator with Lifetime Map & Traffic Updates). The older Garmin that I’ve been using for years didn’t have some of the features I really wanted that are available with this model.

The most important feature for me is the “Junction View” which really helps me stay in the correct lane when there are multiple exits to multiple highways and byways. I drive all over the place and all over the country for my job and my Garmin is my lifeline to getting to my destination on time.

Another really helpful feature for me is the Bluetooth that’s built into the Garmin Nuvi. It has a great noise cancellation and blocks out almost all of the road noise when I’m on the phone. Since I drive in many different states, it’s hard to keep up on the cell phone laws in each city and state so it’s both safer and easier for me to use the Bluetooth on the Nuvi.

Since I don’t go out and buy a new GPS every year, I love the lifetime maps and traffic updates available through Garmin. The price to buy one map update is the same price to get lifetime updates which allows you to get up to four updates a year on that specific device.

I tend to keep my GPS’ for 3-5 years so I have been able to save hundreds and hundreds of dollars by taking advantage of the lifetime map updates. And it’s really nice to get a few updates during the year so that the points of interest stay more up to date.

Although I love my Garmin, I do wish that the battery life was better. I keep my screen brightness relatively low and the volume around 80% and I can only get 2-3 hours of use out of my Garmin Nuvi before I get a low battery notification. With as much driving as I do, I basically have to keep it plugged in all the time.

I’ve figured out a way to keep the power cable out of the way (for the most part) but I guess it’s the same with any GPS device; except maybe the handheld GPS’.

Even with a few minor inconveniences, nothing beats a Garmin Nuvi GPS. The routes are more direct than what other GPS devices use, the incomparable quality and longevity of the Garmin Nuvi is second to none, and the features that the Garmin Nuvi has are above what any other GPS device offers.

There isn’t enough space to write all the cool little things you can get or do with your Garmin Nuvi. Things that are as simple and fun as changing your on screen vehicle to a slice of pepperoni pizza or the ability to check where you are (longitude & latitude along with closest address and nearest intersection).

Take it from me; a guy who uses GPS daily for his livelihood, Garmin makes the best GPS’ right now. They’re reliable, durable, and provide the best maps and features of any GPS device. You’re welcome to keep reading Garmin Nuvi reviews but don’t waste too much time convincing yourself that you’re going to get a Garmin.

Being in a profession that requires me to travel daily across city and state lines, I’ve relied on my Garmin GPS to get me where I need to go and I’ve found a few great places to buy Garmin Nuvi. There are a few local electronics retailers that usually have great prices and a few websites that can offer even better prices.

First of all, you need to know what you want from your GPS device before you just go buy one willy-nilly. I made the big mistake of buying a Garmin Nuvi for over $400 and I only used and wanted the features that were available on the $150 model. I didn’t use the other features that made that Nuvi model more expensive and I wasted a lot of money not knowing what I wanted and needed before I bought that GPS.

I was upgrading my GPS from a boxy looking guy to the thin, widescreen Garmin Nuvi. So do a little research and find out what you need and what you want. A great place to do that is at your local electronics retailer. I’ve had great experiences talking to sales associates at Best Buy and Fry’s.

In my experience, most of the people in the GPS area of those stores are well educated and will help you find the GPS model that best suites you. They’re not pushy or try to make you buy the most expensive model available. In fact, they guy at Best Buy tried to convince me to not buy the $400 Garmin Nuvi and to get the $150 Garmin. Wish I would’ve listened.

Since that epic mistake, I’ve purchased a couple GPS’ from amazon.com after reading their customer reviews and checking out Garmin’s website (garmin.com). Most recently I purchased the Garmin Nuvi 1490LMT (with a 5-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator with Lifetime Map & Traffic Updates) and I love it.

I bought it because I wanted the new “Junction View” which helps me pick and stay in the correct lane on highways and interstates. I’ve missed too many exits because I heard “keep left,” followed by a “veer right” just as I pass my exit.

I also love the Bluetooth in the Garmin Nuvi 1490LMT (LMT means the GPS comes with lifetime maps and traffic updates; the cluster of letters at the end of the Garmin models tells you what features it offers) and I can answer phone calls and the caller hears virtually no road noise. It’s fantastic.

Back to my main point, amazon.com seems to have the best prices on GPS’ and I often find the “new” models cheaper than the “used” GPS’. I’ve tried a few bids on quibids.com and eBay.com but the prices, shipping and overall satisfaction aren’t as good as what I get from amazon.com.

That’s just a personal opinion, but there’s a reason amazon.com sells as much as it does. Even if you decide to buy your Garmin Nuvi elsewhere, at least check out the customer reviews because I think they’re some of the least biased reviews and you’re not getting duped by some sales scam.

There are plenty of places to buy a Garmin GPS, but like I said, you should really research which GPS will suite your needs and wants the best. I’ve been to many different places to buy Garmin Nuvi and I hope you find yourself a great deal and get one soon.

Best Garmin Nuvi

The answer to the question of which is the best Garmin Nuvi is a hard and tricky one to answer. What makes it hard to answer is that there isn’t just one answer.

The “best” Garmin Nuvi for you might be different than the best Garmin Nuvi for me. I think the answer varies so much because there are a lot of different drivers out there with a myriad of individual needs.

I drive almost seven days a week for my profession and I rely heavily on my Garmin Nuvi to get me to my destinations because I rarely visit the same location twice and almost every destination is new to me.

My wife on the other hand, doesn’t get out of town much and knows where all the shops and places are that she likes to go to and doesn’t rely on a GPS to get her to her destinations.

So the best Garmin Nuvi for my wife is most likely completely different than the Garmin Nuvi that best suites my needs. Sure, she loves the Bluetooth and the “Junction View” but she doesn’t have a “need” per se for these features and gets around great on our Garmin Nuvi that’s over 4 years old.

Since I’m always on the road, having the “Junction View” to help me better navigate crazy highway junctions and byways is a must. Everyone knows that it isn’t safe to talk or text on your cell phone while driving so having a quality Bluetooth built into my Garmin Nuvi 1490LMT that removes virtually all road noise is convenient and safe.

If you’re a business person who has a normal office but often wines and dines clients, it’s nice to have the option to have lifetime map updates on your Garmin Nuvi so that you know where great restaurants are and how to get there; on time.

That’s something I love about Garmin, the ability to update your maps up to four times a year every year you own your Garmin. The price for the lifetime updates is exactly the same price as buying only one map update. Pretty awesome if you use your Garmin GPS for more than one year (I usually use mine 3-5 years before getting an updated model).

Some advice that I would pass along to anyone looking to get a GPS for the first time or updating their old dinosaur GPS is to really research several Garmin GPS models before you buy something that doesn’t suite your needs.

I went to Best Buy to get a new Garmin Nuvi several years ago and I ended up spending $400 on a GPS. I have no problem spending that much on a GPS, but I didn’t use the functions and features that made that particular model $400. I used the features and functions of the $150 model that looked exactly identical to the $400 Garmin Nuvi. The sales associate at Best Buy tried to talk me out of buying the newest most expensive GPS but I thought I needed the newest and the best. That was a $250 mistake….

So, bottom line: the best Garmin Nuvi will be different for everyone based on what the driver’s needs and wants are.
